In 2020, amidst the challenges of COVID-19 and a turbulent world, the Nick Jr. DRI team set out to create something truly special—a vibrant and uplifting spot that would resonate deeply with our audience - particularly Black families. Our goal was to craft a message with real heart and authenticity, so we took a bold approach, collaborating with new artists, animators, and musicians to create something unprecedented.

Facing the unique production challenges of a pandemic, I proposed a groundbreaking plan to senior leadership: hand the cameras over to the families themselves. We empowered them to tell their own stories, trusting that their authenticity would shine through. After working internally to set up a dynamic digital conferencing link, I was able to direct the camera and our families remotely. The result was an intimate spot filled with genuine emotion—real tears, real hugs—that conveyed our brand’s powerful message: You Matter.

To bring this vision to life, I enlisted the incredible talent of Andrea Pippins, whose stunning illustrations were animated by the skilled team at Gunner. This project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when we champion and support home-grown, organic collaboration. The result is a powerful piece that not only speaks to the times but also deeply connects with the audience of kids and families.
