In 2020, during the height of COVID-19 and a time of global uncertainty, our team at Nick Jr. set out to make something that felt real. We wanted to create a vibrant, uplifting message that would truly speak to our audience, especially Black families. The goal was simple but powerful: lead with heart and let the message come from an honest place.
At the time, there was real hesitation around filming children during a pandemic. Our team was understaffed and emotionally drained in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. The idea of producing anything at that moment felt heavy. Still, we laid out a clear, doable plan to leadership. We would hand the cameras to the families, many of whom were professional videographers and DPs, and we would direct remotely using a secure digital setup. The footage that came back was stunning. It was intimate, beautifully framed, and full of real emotion. We also pushed to bring in Andrea Pippens to design the motion graphics, knowing her work would give the spot the warmth and depth it deserved. Against all odds, the team pulled it off.
What we got back was unforgettable. Real hugs. Real tears. Real joy. The final spot carried a message that came through loud and clear: You Matter.
